The federal government has introduced a new maternity leave policy for all Canadians.
But some say the policy is too little too late.
Here’s what you need know about what’s going on.1.
The new policy will apply to new parents and their new-born babies for the first six months of the new year, starting Jan. 1, 2018.
It will also apply to all new parents who are receiving their second child in the next three years, regardless of where they live.2.
The policy will allow mothers to work from home during the first month of the leave, with the exception of the first and third months of a child’s first year.3.
The benefit for fathers is the same, but will be capped at 25% of the child’s earnings, while mothers will receive a 25% increase.4.

New mothers are entitled to one week of paid family leave per year.8.

There’s no limit to how many days of paid sick leave you can take, but the government has told new mothers they must be able to work for at least three days a week.11.

There has been no change to the eligibility requirements for childcare leave, or maternity leave for new mothers.14.
The government has also changed the way the new family leave plan is funded, and how much of it will be available to people in the labour force.15.
The federal Liberals are also trying to limit the impact on low-income families, who may have less disposable income, so they can take the new policy as a supplement to their income.16.
The NDP wants to extend the program to all families earning under $50,000 per year, and to all provinces.17.
The Liberals are offering the program a one-time cash payment of $30,000, and will start paying it out in monthly instalments.18.
New parents will be able apply to get up to four weeks of maternity leave, and then another two weeks per child for up to three years.19.
The benefits are for parents who work for the federal government, the provinces and territories, or for employers with at least 500 full-time workers.20.
The plan will also extend to new mothers who are employed by a small business.21.
The Liberal plan will pay for all family leave in addition to maternity leave benefits.22.

There were no changes when the Liberals came to power.
The federal government says the policy will cost $1,000 a year, but that’s only for the new mothers and fathers, not for people who aren’t eligible.
The new family policy has been widely praised by employers and labour advocates.
“It is an opportunity to bring greater economic security to new families who are not able to do so already under the current family leave policy,” said Linda Pritchard, a spokesperson for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
“The policy offers a generous cash benefit to help women and their families afford childcare and pay bills.”
Pritchard said the new plan will give people more time to plan ahead, as well as help to protect their job.
“There are no changes in the way in which the federal family leave benefits are funded,” she said.
“There is no cap, and employers are encouraged to use the new benefit to pay for childcare and other essentials.”
The new policy is designed to help families who want to stay home to raise children, but are struggling to find enough full- time workers to do it.
